Arrests after gun, drugs, cash found in car during Akl traffic stop

Two people were arrested overnight after a traffic stop in Auckland led to the discovery of a loaded gun, drugs, and cash inside a vehicle.

Police carried out the stop on Central Auckland's Grey's Ave at around 11.18pm.

"Upon approaching the vehicle, officers smelt the strong odour of cannabis and invoked a search of it," Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Friend said.

Police found several rounds of ammunition.

Inside the vehicle, police allegedly found almost 500g of cannabis, a loaded gun in the footwell of the vehicle, around 50 MDMA pills, and also 320g of methamphetamine.

Officers also allegedly found approximately $10,000 in cash, as well as several rounds of ammunition.

"The two occupants were taken into custody without incident," Friend said.

A 29-year-old man is facing two charges of unlawfully possessing a firearm/restricted weapon/explosives and one each for the procurement/possession of cannabis, methamphetamine, and ecstasy.

A 30-year-old woman also faces two charges of unlawfully possessing a firearm/restricted weapon/explosives.

Police found several rounds of ammunition.

Both are expected to appear in the Auckland District Court today.

"I'd like to acknowledge our staff's diligent work last night," Friend said.

"It's a good outcome for our community that these drugs and firearm have been removed from circulation and the pair will both face up to the Court."
