MetService has extended weather warnings and watches today as a front is forecast to bring heavy rain and gales to much of the country.
While it's already raining in the upper North Island this afternoon, the worst of the weather is expected to arrive from the south on Monday.
"An intense trough of low pressure is expected to bring gale northwesterlies and heavy rain on Monday," MetService said.
"Some rain and wind watches about the South Island have been upgraded to orange warnings.
"Watches have been added for the North Island as the trough makes its way north."
The forecaster added that snow may settle above 900m in Fiordland.
Temperatures are also set to plunge, as outlined below:
Parts of Auckland also face the prospect of downpours this afternoon.
