Westpac helicopter marks first rescue mission of 2024

January 1, 2024

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter has already undertaken its first mission of 2024, after a man fell on some rocks at Army Bay while going to watch the sunrise and go fishing.

At the Whangaparāoa Beach, the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust assisted the 50-year-old man, who needed to be extracted by a winch from a height of 45 feet.

He was flown to North Shore hospital in moderate condition.

In one of the last missions of 2023, the helicopter yesterday rescued four men who were swept out to sea at Bethells Beach at about 5.37pm. Surf Lifesaving pulled the patients from the water and CPR was in progress on the crew’s arrival.

“We flew a male patient in his teens to Auckland City Hospital in critical condition,” Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust said at the time.

The Auckland service finished 2023 having undertaken 1026 missions in total.

It is the 10th consecutive year of the service undertaking over 1000 missions.
