Police now believe missing Ōtaki woman Michaela Leger was in a single-seater kayak, not a two-seater, as originally reported.
On Saturday, a woman matching 29-year-old Leger's description was seen taking a yellow kayak into the sea.
Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Middlemiss said: "Despite an extensive search by air, land and sea, we have not yet located Michaela or the yellow kayak she was in.
"After making extensive inquiries, we now believe the kayak had only one seat and want to hear from anyone who saw a single-seater kayak in days since Saturday 21 October, but did not report it."
Anyone who comes across a kayak similar to the one photographed and that looks out of place or abandoned is asked to contact police via 105.
