A staff member working at the dialysis unit at North Shore Hospital has tested positive for Covid-19.

The positive test comes after a patient receiving treatment in the unit on Saturday subsequently tested positive for the virus.

The update was provided to staff via email.

It's believed to be the first time Covid-19 had been transmitted to a hospital staff member at their workplace.

Auckland public health teams are also following up other people who were in the dialysis unit on Saturday.

The patient with Covid-19 became unwell during treatment, according to the Waitematā DHB.

They were then tested for Covid-19 and subsequently tested positive.

The DHB said the person “was appropriately screened before coming to the unit and again on arrival at the unit”.

The dialysis unit was temporarily closed on Saturday afternoon so a deep clean could be completed.

“Auckland Regional Public Health Services staff and the DHB are currently following up with other people who were receiving services in the unit at the same time as the person who has tested positive for Covid-19 to provide advice around isolation and testing,” the Ministry of Health said.

Separately, on Sunday morning, two people who tested positive for Covid-19 were at North Shore Hospital’s ED.

The Ministry of Health said they were awaiting transfer to a quarantine facility and were taken to hospital for clinical assessment to see if they needed hospital-level care.
