Health services clear unwell people who arrived into Auckland on flight from Melbourne

People arriving on a plane from Melbourne showing signs of illness have been cleared to leave after a medical incident at Auckland Airport this afternoon.

A St John spokesperson has confirmed to 1 NEWS that it responded to a "medical related incident" at Auckland Airport’s international terminal.

Three ambulances and three St John managers attended.

An Auckland Airport spokesperson confirmed with 1 NEWS that St John assessed passengers aboard Virgin Australia flight VA167 from Melbourne before letting them off the plane.

Auckland Regional Public Health Services says "a large number" of people became unwell on a flight that landed from Melbourne.

An ARPHs spokesperson says passengers reported coughing symptoms.

A statement from Virgin Australia says: "Flight VA167 from Melbourne to Auckland safely landed at 1530 local time.

"The pilot made the decision to alert the New Zealand Ministry of Health as a precautionary measure to check the health of some passengers who felt unwell.

"Passengers have now been cleared by the Ministry of Health and are able to continue on their journeys."
