Man who locked himself in gas station bathroom near Queenstown after police chase faces 18 charges

A man who locked himself in a service station bathroom in Queenstown yesterday after allegedly attempting to break into a commercial premise in Invercargill while face 18 charges, with more to follow, police say.

Police were led on a pursuit for several hours yesterday .

A 40-year-old man was finally arrested after locking himself in a bathroom at a gas station in Frankton after road spikes were deployed near Kawerau Bridge.

Police confirmed this afternoon the man faces charges including three counts of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, seven counts of burglary, three counts of theft, and robbery.

He's also charged with failing to stop when required, reckless driving, refusing officers' request for blood, and attempting to unlawfully take a motor vehicle. 

Police say the man's alleged offending began in Christchurch in late June this year and continued in Ashburton, Timaru, Balclutha, Invercargill and Queenstown.

He is due in Invercargill District Court tomorrow, September 10.
