A 54-year-old man will face a slew of charges in relation to a stolen 10-tonne truck that crashed into the Morrinsville Police station and was later driven at patrol cars last night.
Shortly before midnight a truck was reported stolen from a Te Aroha address, around this time a vehicle also crashed into the front doors of the Morrinsville Police Station causing extensive damage to the front of the building.
The vehicle then left the scene, and shortly after on SH26 heading towards Te Aroha the stolen truck was located.
Police say they attempted to stop the truck, but the driver failed to stop, instead driving towards two Police cars.
The stolen truck was again observed driving around Te Aroha where it drove at Police cars for a second time.
Cordons were put in place around Te Aroha, road spikes were deployed and the Eagle helicopter was being used.
The truck finally came to a stop after Police fired two shots at the front tyre of the truck.
The 54-year-old man has been charged with unlawful conversion of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for Police, resisting Police, intentional damage, assault with a weapon, reckless driving and attempted arson of the vehicle.
He is due to appear in Hamilton District Court tomorrow morning.
"Police staff involved demonstrated courage and initiative," says Inspector Jeff Penno.
