Review after another patient found dead in Waikato Hospital bathroom

A review has been launched into how a patient died in a bathroom at Waikato Hospital.

Health New Zealand confirmed the patient's death, saying they "passed away unexpectedly" in the bathroom on a surgical ward in mid-August.

"Our deepest sympathies are with the patient’s family," said Health New Zealand's Waikato district acting group director of operations, Dr Gary Hopgood.

"Whenever an unexpected death occurs in hospital, a review is initiated to establish the circumstances, and this event has triggered such a review.

"We are not able to provide further details ahead of the completion of that process," he added.

Hopgood said the ward was fully staffed when the man died.

In late June, a man died in a toilet at the hospital's emergency department after reportedly waiting more than nine hours to be seen.

"The review did not identify that additional monitoring would have changed the outcome in this case," the review said.
