Wellingtonians winding down from a Boxing Day dinner of Christmas leftovers have been given a jolt after a 3.8 magnitude quake tonight.
It struck 10 kilometres south-west of the capital at a depth of 40 kilometres at 7.17pm.
Almost 4,000 people have said on GeoNet that they felt the shaking.
One Twitter user said it felt "like a short electric shock" in Haitaitai.
