Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has extended a warm invitation to the newly engaged Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, inviting them to visit New Zealand in a Christmas card message.

Speaking outside the Auckland City Mission today, where she helped distribute food packages to the needy, Ms Ardern was asked by media if she had sent the royal couple a Christmas card.

"You have to stop going through my mail," she quipped before continuing: "Yes I did send a Christmas card to the newly engaged couple and really just wished them a happy best of season and invited them to come to New Zealand anytime.

"Harry obviously has a really strong connection here, and his new bride would be most welcome."

When another person joked New Zealand would be a good place for them to get married, the Prime Minister had a good idea of her own.

"It'd be a lovely place for a honeymoon as well," she said.
