It seems New Zealanders are pretty good at hurting themselves while celebrating Christmas.
In response to a question during today's final question time at Parliament, Minister for ACC Iain Lees-Galloway revealed the cost to the taxpayers from people doing themselves a mischief over the Christmas period.
He said last year, there were 137 ACC claims related to tree decorating.
"There were also claims related to hanging lights, opening Christmas presents, carving the dinner, and even popping the champagne cork resulted in eight claims alone.
"Stay safe New Zealand, have fun, and please make sure you come back safe in 2018."
His response may have been a thinly-veiled dig at Labour colleague Tamati Coffey, whose partner Tim Smith hurt himself while trying to decorate their Christmas tree.
He was knocked out and fell on his elbow, resulting in a trip to hospital.
On a more serious note, Mr Lees-Galloway, said five people have been killed in workplace incidents in the past week, and four on the roads in the last 24 hours.
