Northern Districts wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert has thanked his hockey background for a stunning array of shots as he belted New Zealand's fastest Twenty-20 century against Auckland last weekend.

Seifert, 23, smashed 107 runs from 42 balls, reaching his hundred from just 40 deliveries, as the Knights sealed a seven-run victory over the Aces on Saturday, setting a new record for the quickest hundred by a New Zealand batsman.

Speaking to 1 NEWS after the staggering innings, the young keeper spoke about his time playing hockey as a junior, helping him develop his sensational hitting game.

"I've always been playing cricket and hockey through age group," Seifert said.

"I've always enjoyed playing hockey, I think it's been good for my cricket as well - with the funky shots, I think that's all kind of hockey background."

"I think it did me good."

When asked about his cricketing idol, Seifert didn't have to think too hard, following in the footsteps of New Zealand's most prolific gloveman, and explosive batsman.

"Being a batter-wicketkeeper, always Brendon McCullum."

"He's done a lot of knocks like I managed to do. He's always been my inspiration."
