Cracks first appeared in the ground behind the Highbury shops in Birkenhead a month ago , Kaipatiki Local Board Chair Danielle Grant said.

She said local politicians had been aware of a gradual widening of gaps in the car park.

Auckland Transport cordoned off parts of the car park a number of weeks ago.

However, heavy rain gradually made the problem worse until a slip occurred yesterday.

There's no immediate danger to the public and buildings aren't threatened at this stage.

A statement from Auckland Transport said an engineering geologist was on the site yesterday to assess the slip danger and provide recommendations.

"Engineers are working to determine the stability of the fill and whether we need to cordon off further areas of the car park," said Auckland Transport.
