'This crap': Ongoing vandalism at Whanganui public toilets

Toilet seats damaged at public toilets owned by the Whanganui District Council.

Police have been notified amid ongoing vandalism at the Whanganui District Council's public toilets – with one lavatory alone being targeted five times in a month.

In a post to social media this afternoon, the council said: "We’re still putting up with this crap."

The council said vandalism in its public facilities was an ongoing issue, with Springvale Park, Rangiora St and Duncan Pavilion "among the toilets being repeatedly vandalised".

"At Duncan Pavilion alone, there have been five separate incidents since late September. This includes broken and removed plumbing, damaged waste traps and toilets stuffed full of toilet paper (we’ll spare you the graphic photos!)."

A public toilet with its plumbing removed.

The Duncan Pavilion toilets were closed until further notice "while we work on a solution", the council said, adding that the police had been notified.

"The damage comes at a cost to the community and we’ve had enough."

The council was looking at replacing the damaged toilets with stainless steel ones "to make them more resistant to vandalism".

"Public toilets are for everyone to use, not to be trashed. Vandalism means others miss out, so please help us look after our shared spaces."

Anyone who sees people damaging public property has been asked to report it to the police on 105.
