The People's Debate: You ask the questions

Watch live on November 5.

It’s the last chance to put questions to politicians ahead of the election and we want to know what you want to know, writes Q+A host Jack Tame.

Put your questions to the politicians by filling in a short form here

Every three years, the people who want to lead our country get put on the spot.

Those of us in the media get the privilege of asking a lot of those tough questions.

From the bright lights of a televised debate between Christopher and Chris, to press conferences and policy announcements, to campaign walkabouts through many, many community food markets - with a microphone in our hand we’ve tried to reflect what New Zealanders of all stripes want to know from their prospective future government about the big issues.

The cost of living. Our sense of safety in the community and concerns about crime. The balance between the economy and the environment. How we’re educating our kids, and taking care of our most vulnerable. What sort of country we want to be now, and decades into the future.

But we’ve had our chance as journalists to ask those questions. Now it’s your turn.

That’s the idea behind the Q+A People’s Debate, which will be live on TVNZ and RNZ at 7pm on Thursday, November 5, just two days before the election.

If there’s something you want to see asked of some of this country’s leading politicians, this is your chance.

I'm not going to write the questions in this debate. You are. The 1News team will be hitting the streets with cameras to ask people for questions. We’ll be putting calls out on social media for people to send video questions in. And if you click here it'll take you to a form that you can fill out to let us know what you want answered.

I'll be joined by leading figures in National, Labour, the Greens, ACT, New Zealand First, Te Pāti Māori and Opportunity. There’s going to be a massive audience in the room, and hundreds of thousands more people watching from home. This will be the last big chance the politicians have to win voters over.

The most up-to-date polling suggests the election is still incredibly close. Maybe you already know who you're voting for. But maybe, you, like many other Kiwis, are still making up your mind. While early voting has become more popular over recent elections, it’s expected more than a million people will still wait until Election Day – Saturday, November 7 – to cast their ballot.

So what haven’t you got an answer on yet? What do you still want to know? And what’s the thing that could help you make up your mind?

The chance is yours.

Fill out the form here, or look out on @1newsnz on Instagram and Facebook. Send in your question, and tune in to TVNZ1 and TVNZ+ at 7pm on November 5 to hear politicians give you an answer.
