Replica Panmure sign unveiled after seven year wait

The fences are due to be removed next week.

A replica of the retro-style Panmure sign has been unveiled in its new location, seven years after the original was removed.

Despite community advocacy, efforts to have the sign reinstalled had been unsuccessful since 2021.

Now, the new sign stands at the entrance to the Te Horata cycleway on the Ellerslie Panmure Highway.

The replica Panmure sign has been unveiled.

"We hope you enjoy this familiar landmark back in the ground," Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board said in a post to social media.

The original was built to reflect the township's growth from the 1940s to the 1960s, designed with a 1950s space-age theme.

It was removed and placed into storage in 2019 as part of the Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative. Then, an engineer's report found it had been damaged in removal and wouldn't meet wind regulations.

The replica was installed seven years after the original was removed and stored.

The new version stands at 13 metres tall, two metres shorter than the original.

The fencing around the sign is due to be removed next week, according to the local board.
