Firefighters control large property blaze in north Auckland

Pictures show the house's roof appearing severely damaged

Emergency services have controlled a large blaze at a north Auckland property, where plumes of black smoke were spotted above the hilltop house.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they were alerted at 2.05pm and sent 12 fire trucks.

"Crews first arrived at 2.14pm, finding the fire well involved," the spokesperson said.

A helicopter reported to the scene, carrying a monsoon bucket of water.

Fire and Emergency said a helicopter with a monsoon bucket was used to prevent the fire spreading to the surrounding forest.

"The fire spread to nearby vegetation, and one helicopter was on scene supporting ground crews with a monsoon bucket," the spokesperson said.

"The vegetation fire is now under control and the helicopter has left the scene," FENZ said.

FENZ received the initial call from someone who spotted the blaze from their boat.

Neighbour Angie Harvey said despite the helicopter presence she was still worried.

"[I'm] now watching the helicopter with monsoon buckets going back and forth," Harvey said.

"I'm hoping the neighbours are OK. Pretty scary stuff when you live remote in the bush!"

Witness Sasha Murray told 1News she spotted the blaze from her boat at Ti Point around 1.40pm, and recorded the fire worsening until 3.12pm.

A police spokesperson confirmed crews were only required for traffic management.
