A man has been charged with murder and a homicide investigation launched following a fatal crash in Te Puke at the weekend.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Te Puke Highway and Rangiuru Rd at around 10.50am on Saturday following a single vehicle crash.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, one person was pronounced dead at the scene while a second person was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition.

Detective Senior Sergeant Natalie Flowerdew-Brown said the serious crash unit had since carried out a scene examination.

"A homicide investigation has been launched, and police continue to make inquiries into the crash," she said.

A 25-year-old man was due to appear in Tauranga District Court today.

Flowerdew-Brown said police were continuing to appeal for information about the vehicle, described as a white 2005 Toyota Caldina – particularly its movements in the Brown Rd area.

Police previously said the vehicle had been travelling along Brown Rd "at high speed" before crashing near the intersection.

"Any information, no matter how small, could be crucial for our inquiries," Flowerdew-Brown said.

Anyone who witnessed the vehicle or had relevant CCTV or dashcam footage was encouraged contact police on 105 referencing file number 261010/7623.
