Police are searching for an unknown man who prevented a serious fire by moving a blazing car at an Auckland petrol station.
Emergency services were called to a Mill Rd station around 12.10pm but, by the time they arrived, the vehicle had already been moved clear of the forecourt.
Sergeant Mark Fleming of Counties Manukau Highway Patrol said CCTV footage showed an unidentified man protecting a nearby fuel pump from catching fire.
"The footage shows the unoccupied vehicle well enveloped in smoke and flames when an unknown man approaches it," Fleming said. "The man very calmly enters the vehicle, releases the handbrake and pushes the vehicle away from the pump while others assist with the fire."
Fleming said the outcome would have been more serious if not for the man's quick response.
"His brave actions prevented a much more serious situation from eventuating," he said.
Police wanted to contact and thank the man for his bravery and asked the public with any information to help identify him.
"Not everyone is able to jump into action in a dangerous situation, and this man deserves to be acknowledged for his courageous quick-thinking,” Sergeant Fleming said.
No other damage was reported, and the fire was safely extinguished.
Police can be contacted with information via 105, referencing file number 261008/1007.
