Kiwi driver Ryan Wood's Supercar has suffered major damage on the day of qualifying for the Bathurst 1000 after a crash during practice.

The TWG Racing driver hit the outside wall after clipping the inside while coming out of Forrest's Elbow.

"Clipped the inside wall," Wood said, over the radio. "So sorry."

His engineer replied: "Mate, it's practice. You're always going to have to try it, so it's alright. We'll get it fixed up."

The session was red-flagged, and Wood car was removed from the track.

The crash occurred at a crucial part of the weekend, with qualifying set to take place at 6pm tonight NZT. It will likely be a long day for the TWG crew, as they work to get the car running again.

"The boys will work pretty hard, and that's what I feel stink about," Wood said. "It's just given them so much work that they really didn't need."

TWG Racing team principal Carl Faux said his crew was "prepared" and had experience from the last few years.

"It's seeing how much damage is done and whether we can get this out later today or not, but we'll do it precisely and make sure that we can get out with a really straight car for the rest of the weekend.

"Ryan's good – he's apologetic, but hey, this stuff happens at the mountain, and it's day two.

"There's plenty more laps he's going to do around here this weekend, so we'll see what goes on."

Co-driver Jaxon Evans said it was looking like a good lap for Wood until he "miscalculated".

"As we know here, if you touch any concrete, it's normally not good news.

"A bit of work for the boys to do, but I'm sure we'll get it turned around."
