A recall has been issued for University of Auckland graduation bears just two weeks after the spring cap and gown ceremonies – due to a possible entanglement or strangulation hazard.
The recall was issued by Antics Marketing Limited for three types of University of Auckland graduation bears as the elastic chinstrap attached to the removable trencher may not meet applicable toy safety requirements for cord and strap length, Product Safety said.
"The chinstrap may present an entanglement or strangulation hazard."
The bears were sold at Auckland University Campus Bookstore from August 3 to September 28, 2026.
The recall applied only to the three bear styles featuring a removable graduation trencher secured with an elastic chinstrap.
Anyone who purchased the bears were advised to stop using the removable graduation trencher immediately and return it to the University of Auckland for a refund or replacement at no cost.
The replacement product is the standard graduation bear with the gown and trencher securely attached.
For further information or to arrange a return, refund or replacement, customers can email campusstore@auckland.ac.nz or visit the Campus Store from 10am–3pm.
The University of Auckland's spring 2026 graduation ceremonies took place on September 22-24.
