Gas leak contained after buildings evacuated in Auckland's Newmarket

Emergency service at the scene in Newmarket.

A gas leak which saw buildings evacuated and blocked off a busy road in Auckland's Newmarket this morning has now been contained.

Fire and Emergency NZ were called to Khyber Pass Rd at around 9.40am, responding with two crews from Remuera and Auckland City.

Police said the line was damaged today while earth works were being carried out in the area.

Khyber Pass Rd was briefly closed between Crowhurst St and Broadway, and nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and to expect delays while emergency services worked at the scene.

In an update this afternoon, police said the road had now reopened.

"The works that were previously underway are continuing, however the leak has been contained and there is no risk to the public," police said.

There were no reports of any injuries.
