A stranger who stopped his car, went into a burning Gisborne home and pulled an 89-year-old through a window has left police searching for him so they can say thank you.
Fire and Emergency NZ were called to a home ablaze on Aberdeen Rd at around 1am, responding with crews from Gisborne and Manutake.
Police said the man was in a car driving past and saw the blaze before pulling over.
"He then entered the burning building and pulled the occupant to safety through a window. However, he left the scene before emergency services were able to speak with him."
Detective Senior Sergeant John Love said the man's actions deserved recognition.
"Police would like to identify the man so we can thank him for his quick thinking and courageous actions," he said.
The 89-year-old was taken to hospital, where they remain under observation and further assessment.
