A style of coloured contact lenses sold on Shein's New Zealand website has been recalled after a sample tested positive for a bacterium that could cause an eye infection.
The Syliuwa Zero-Powered Contact Lenses — white lenses marketed for cosplay and makeup use — were sold on Shein's NZ site from August 7, 2024 to August 19, 2026, under product code sb2408056243278800.
Product Safety NZ said a sample of the solution in which the lenses were packaged tested positive for Burkholderia cepacia complex.
"Exposure to this bacterium may pose a risk of eye infection or irritation and an incident was reported in the United Kingdom involving a user who developed an eye infection," it said in a statement.
Customers were urged to stop using the product and dispose of it safely.
"SHEIN will be in contact directly with owners of this product to provide a full refund to the original payment method," a statement read.
Owners are asked to confirm receipt of the recall notice to help Shein account for all affected products and process refunds.
Anyone who doesn't hear from Shein directly, or has questions about the recall, has been advised to contact the company at nzcsteam@shein.com.
"If you experience any eye symptoms, including redness, pain, discharge or blurred vision after wearing these contact lenses, please seek medical advice promptly," the statement said.
