Trains cancelled after 'transport incident' at Auckland station

A railway level crossing in Auckland's Mt Albert has been shut down as emergency services respond to an incident involving a westbound train this afternoon.

Officers were called to the road and pedestrian level crossing next to the Baldwin Avenue train station at 3.28pm, a police spokesperson said.

"There is no ongoing risk, but police ask the public to avoid the station at this time."

There are major delays and cancellations across the train network as a result.

Hato Hone St John said it responded with an ambulance and a rapid response unit. Fire and Emergency NZ responded with crews from Avondale, Balmoral and Papatoetoe.

Footage captured by 1News showed a police cordon on Asquith Ave, with a train stopped across the Rossgrove Terrace level crossing.

A student who was aboard the train told 1News he felt a bump just before reaching the station, jolting him and other passengers forward in their seats.

Passengers were asked to stay put and remained on the train for what felt like 40 minutes before they were able to leave.

Mt Albert Grammar School staff were seen at the scene.

Auckland Transport said there were delays and cancellations across the rail network.

"Some train services will now begin operating between Waitematā (Britomart) and Morningside stations, and between Avondale and Swanson stations.

"However, these services will be intermittent, and we continue to encourage our customers to check the AT Journey Planner or the AT Mobile app for the latest information to plan their journey home.

"Rail replacement bus services have been called in and are providing support to customers on the Western Line between Waitematā (Britomart) and Swanson stations."

Albert-Eden-Puketāpapa councillor Julie Fairey said there had been a transport incident at the Baldwin Ave station and that more people coming into the area was "unhelpful".

"The police and security are there and traffic management is coming for Rossgrove Terrace," she said.
