Cordons are in place on two roads in Nelson this afternoon after police were called to a "serious incident".
Police were called to Quarantine Rd in Tāhunanui at about 12pm on Friday, with officers also in attendance on nearby Parkers Rd, about 1km to the north.
"There is no threat to public safety, however cordons are in place," said a police spokesperson said.
"Members of the public are asked to avoid these areas."
St John said it had responded to the incident with an ambulance and an operations manager.
NZTA said police had closed SH6 (Tahunanui Dr) between Parkers Rd and Green St.
"Road users are advised to avoid the area and to consider an alternate route."
The eBus R2 service is being detoured as a result.
Nelson Airport remained accessible, with police advising Bolt Rd as an alternative route.
A 1News reporter on the scene could see several police staff at the Parkers Rd cordon, with the road closed between Muritai St and State Highway 6 (Annesbrook Dr).
Local business owner Sarah King-Turner told 1News a crowd had gathered at the scene on Parkers Rd when the incident first unfolded, though she was unsure what had happened.
"All I can see now is police cars — the area is all cordoned off and the police have cleared all the public away."
