A Christchurch bakery has sold out of its horsemeat pies on the first day of their release, proving online doubters wrong.
Hoon Hay Kiwi Bakery revealed on social media it had run out of horsemeat offerings, just two days after announcing the upcoming arrival to the pie cabinet.
"What an incredible response! Thank you all for your tremendous support and for showing so much love for our new Horse Pie!" the bakery posted.
A bakery staff member, Dany, told the NZ Herald the response to the pies was unexpected, acknowledging the addition to the menu had sparked debates.
“When we post it on Facebook, it’s gone viral and, without us knowing. We’ve got, I think now, over 400 comments.
“Some of them, they oppose us selling the horse, and they said it’s kind of like the bonding animal, and we shouldn’t do that. And some people say there has been like the culture of eating horse like 1000 years ago.”
Despite the online backlash, the plain horse, horse and cheese and curried horse pies proved popular, with Dany telling the Herald the controversial Facebook post worked in their favour.
“I think a lot of people this morning, they came by Facebook and mostly it’s their first time coming here, so I think the post was quite successful.”
Following the high demand, Hoon Hay Kiwi Bakery reassured Christchurch pie lovers that Thursday's sell-out did not mark the end of the horse pies.
"Don’t worry — there will be MORE tomorrow!" the bakery told followers.
