More than 220 native plants stolen from Canterbury river bank

More than 225 native plants were stolen from its location beside the Eyre River in Canterbury.

Environment Canterbury is speaking out after more than 220 native plants were stolen from a restoration site beside the Eyre River.

In a post to social media this afternoon, the council said 225 plants were recently stolen.

"These plants aren't just there to look good. They're part of our work to restore the river environment, support flood resilience and provide habitat for native wildlife," Environment Canterbury said.

"When they're taken, our environment and community miss out."

Photographs showed a black tarp littered with discarded cardboard where the plants had been removed.

The council says the plants "aren't just there to look good".

Environment Canterbury called for anyone passing by their planting sites to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour.

"If you see anything suspicious in this area or at another one of our restoration sites, please contact us on 0800 324 636."
