A body has been found in the search for Jeremy Robertson, who went missing last year and is the sole suspect in his mother's 2025 death.
The body was found by officers at around 8am at Lake Rotokākahi near Rotorua. They had been making enquiries into the 2025 death of Karen Gilbert-Palmer.
The lake, near Robertson's last known location, waswhere his vehicle found abandoned in a carpark the day after his mother was found dead.
"While formal identification is ongoing, it is believed the body may be that of a person of interest related to the homicide investigation," Detective Senior Sergeant David Thompson said.
"There is no threat to the public, but there is an increased police presence in the area while our enquiries continue."
Tūhurangi Ngāti Wāhiao blessed the area.
Robertson's mother, Gilbert-Palmer, was found dead at her Pahiatua home on October 15 by a friend who had been unable to contact her.
A homicide investigation was launched, with her red Mitsubishi ASX missing from the scene.
The vehicle was found unoccupied the following day at the Blue and Green Lakes lookout on Tarawera Rd, more than 350km from Pahiatua.
It's believed Robertson left Pahiatua shortly after his mother's death.
Despite an "extensive search", the man could not be found. Activity on his bank accounts and mobile phone ceased.
In May, police said the "most likely scenario is that he died shortly after arriving in the Green and Blue Lakes area."
