'Use an alternative route': Snow closes SH1 north of Dunedin

State Highway 1 in north Dunedin is closed this morning following a dumping of heavy snow.

New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said State Highway 1 from Dunedin to Waitati (Leith Saddle) was closed due to the snow, and urged road users to delay their journey or use an alternate route.

NZTA's journey planned showed SH 87 Outram to Middlemarch was also closed due to snow and ice.

"State Highway 85 between Kyeburn and Palmerston is open but subject to an area warning because of snow," the agency said.

"On State Highway 88 at Sawyers Bay, caution is being urged because of surface flooding, and a strong wind warning is also in place in Otago, with extra care required for high-sided vehicles like campervans, towing vehicles and motorcycles when travelling through the area."

It followed a week of heavy weather for the region, with some watches and warnings still in effect for parts of the North and South Island.

Lewis Pass (SH7) – 13 hours from 10am to 11pm today.

Arthur's Pass (SH73) – 17 hours from 1am to 6pm today.

Lindis Pass (SH8) – 22 hours from 8pm Sunday to 6pm today.

Crown Range Rd – 23 hours from 8pm Sunday to 7pm today.
