Transport authorities are warning motorists on the North Island's east coast to "drive to the conditions overnight and tomorrow" as heavy rain warnings come into effect for some areas.
Yesterday's heavy rain in Northland and Auckland has since moved east, MetService said, with some wet weather still expected for most of the country today.
"The fronts responsible are moving east, taking most of the heavy rain with them, leaving just showers in their wake. So, partly cloudy around the lower South Island, with the chance of showers for everyone until tonight. Winds will be mostly light," meteorologist Heather Keats said.
An orange heavy rain warning is in effect for Bay of Plenty west of Kawerau until 3pm today, and for Gisborne Tairāwhiti north of Tolaga Bay until 8pm tomorrow.
The forecaster said up to 120mm was expected, with peak rates of 10-20mm/h forecast.
"Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible," it said.
"Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously."
A heavy rain watch was also issued for Bay of Plenty about Kawerau and eastwards until 9am tomorrow.
New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said, "if you do need to travel over the next 24-48 hours, remember to switch on your headlights on, increase your following distance and be prepared for unexpected hazards in these conditions.
"Please also be aware of the possibility of short notice road closures as we continue to monitor the warnings in place, the rainfall levels and any possible slips or damage, such as fallen trees," an NZTA spokesperson said.
Crews were monitoring the region's state highways, including Waioweka Gorge, and would be on standby ready to respond to issues around the region.
