Heavy rain is on the cards for the upper North Island today, as a low-pressure system makes its way towards the country.
According to MetService, the system will move southeast from above New Zealand, "bringing periods of heavy rain".
Heavy rain watches are currently in place for Northland, Auckland, Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel Peninsula, and Bay of Plenty about, west, and east of the Rangitaiki River.
Most of the watches had a moderate chance of upgrading to a warning, aside from Bay of Plenty east of the Rangitaiki River, which had a "high chance".
"Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible," MetService said.
"Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously."

Northland – 18 hours from 4am Saturday to 10pm Saturday.
Auckland and Great Barrier Island – 15 hours from 9am Saturday to midnight Saturday.
Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty about and west of the Rangitāiki River – 12 hours from noon Saturday to midnight Saturday.
Bay of Plenty east of the Rangitāiki River – 12 hours from 3pm Saturday to 3am Sunday.
