A homicide investigation has been launched after a man stabbed in the Auckland suburb of Blockhouse Bay on Saturday afternoon died in hospital from his injuries.
The victim was wounded in a "violent confrontation" on Holbrook St, near the Shoreham St intersection, at about 3.40pm on Saturday, before he got into a vehicle with associates and was driven to a nearby bus stop on Blockhouse Bay Rd.
Acting Detective Inspector Craig Bolton said an ambulance was called immediately.
The man was rushed to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.
“He had undergone emergency surgery, being kept in intensive care," Bolton said.
"Sadly, we can advise the man has since succumbed to those injuries and died in hospital during the evening of August 23."
Police had since set up Operation Falconer to investigate the man's death yesterday.
Scene examinations were carried out at two locations on Saturday, including where the initial altercation took place and where the victim was found by ambulance staff.
Anyone in the area at the time has been urged to come forward.
"If you have dashcam footage, CCTV footage or saw anything – we need to hear from you."
Officers were seeking any witnesses to the initial confrontation on Holbrook St or near the bus stop on nearby Blockhouse Bay Rd.
Police have also sought and been granted interim non-publication orders around the victim's name from the Coroner's Office.
Under section 74 of the Coroners Act, the man's full name and identifying particulars cannot be reported or published.
"We are in a sensitive phase of our investigation, and we haven't taken this step lightly, but the community can be reassured that we are working to identify those present and responsible," he said.
Bolton said officers had been liaising with the man's next of kin.
"Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time, and we will continue to update them on progress in our enquiries," he said.
