A man has been remanded in in custody after a family's golden retriever was struck and killed by a driver who allegedly sped towards people in Silverdale before running the dog over.
The 52-year-old appeared in the North Shore District Court this morning charged with unlawful intimidation, driving while disqualified, reckless driving and reckless ill-treatment of an animal.
He will reappear in December.
Police were called to Croix Greens about 4.50pm on July 30 after reports a speeding driver had driven at people who had signalled for him to slow down.
The female dog was spooked, ran into the road, and the vehicle accelerated towards her.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Jimmy Kim said the incident had prompted online discussion in the community.
"We are aware the community has been talking about this incident online and naming the alleged offender," he said.
"We want to reassure the public we have investigated the incident, and earlier today we arrested a 52-year-old man."
Kim said police were mindful of those affected.
"Police acknowledge the effect this incident has had on the Whangaparāoa Community, particular those who witnessed the events," he said.
"However, we want to ask that now the matter is going through court please avoid speculating and discussing the incident, and the alleged offender, online and in public forums."
