A seal pup that found itself flopping around a South Auckland suburb was returned to its natural habitat by police yesterday.
Police said the adventurous pup was spotted making its way through Papakura yesterday.
Concerned for the animal, a member of the public called police.
"After consulting with DOC and receiving advice on the safest way to help, officers were able to relocate the young pup back to his natural environment," an Instagram post read.
"An ex-seal-ent job by everyone involved and a happy ending for this little traveller!"
According to the Department of Conservation, fur seals are known to venture several kilometres inland, following rivers and streams. They can appear in unusual places like backyards, roadsides, and inner city streets.
"This is normal behaviour, particularly for young animals as they explore their environment."
If one is spotted, DOC recommends staying 20 metres away. People should leave the animals alone, not make loud noises or throw anything at them, keep dogs and children away, not feed them, and "never" attempt to touch one.
If concerned, people should call DOC's emergency hotline.
In 2023, a seal went through a KFC drive-through in the same suburb.
In December last year, a seal pup surprised patrons of a Richmond pub when it waddled into the venue.
