Police arrested nine people as tens of thousands of fans celebrated in South Auckland after Tonga snatched a 20-18 Rugby League World Cup win over Samoa in Sydney last night.
Superintendent Shanan Gray said most supporters celebrated peacefully and lawfully, but police were disappointed by how a minority behaved.
“It was concerning for police to witness individuals putting themselves and others in harm’s way with high-risk behaviours, including running into roads, poor driving choices and public intoxication,” he said.
Gray said noise from loudspeakers and car horns had gone on into the early hours of the morning in some areas.
“This is unacceptable, and it has a significant impact on the wellbeing of local residents and businesses.”
The nine arrests were for disorder-related offending.
Police said 160 staff had been deployed last night only for gatherings linked to the tournament.
Gray said this placed significant demand on police resources, and he asked fans to think about how their actions affected the whole community.
“The message from police is clear: celebrations don’t override expectations. Gatherings and those attending them must be safe, lawful and respectful.”
Police will keep a visible presence in town centres to monitor celebrations and keep supporters and the public safe.
