Watch: Family of nine flee burning home in Sydney

CCTV footage has captured the moment a family of nine fled their burning home in Sydney yesterday.

A family home in Hebersham, west of Sydney, went up in flames shortly after midnight after a second-hand e-bike exploded inside.

Dramatic footage supplied to 9News showed the nine occupants — including seven children — dashing from the burning property with seconds to spare.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang at the start of the fire, followed by several explosions, with the building soon overcome by the flames.

Fire and Rescue NSW Acting Superintendent Peter Murray describe it as "a very intense fire".

“There were flames coming out of the roof, the window and sides of the house," he told 9News.

"It was completely ablaze," one family member told 9News.

"I think we were all pretty lucky that nobody was hurt... lucky to get all the kids out," a family member said.

Authorities confirmed the blaze was not suspicious and was caused by a second-hand e-bike, which exploded while it was being charged.

Firefighters around the globe, including those in New Zealand, have cautioned the use of electric bikes and scooters in recent years following fires related to charging the devices.

Last year, Auckland Council conducted more testing on lithium-ion batteries commonly found in e-bikes, smartphones, and e-scooters, saying these were responsible for a growing number of fires during bin collection runs.
