Intruder eating food confronted by homeowner in Māngere

Police were called to a home on Walmsley Rd in the suburb of Māngere at around 9.40pm on Wednesday.

Police allege an intruder was helping himself to food in a South Auckland kitchen when the homeowner confronted him last night, sparking a struggle and a fence-hopping chase before he was arrested.

Police were called to a home on Walmsley Rd in the suburb of Māngere at around 9.40pm on Wednesday.

Senior Sergeant Steve Albrey said a resident encountered the alleged intruder in the kitchen.

"The man was allegedly eating food from the home while packing property into his backpack," he said.

"When confronted by the occupant, a physical altercation ensued."

Police said the man fled through neighbouring properties, jumping fences as the Eagle helicopter tracked him from above.

"Eagle guided officers on the ground to the man’s location on Hall Avenue, where he was arrested," Albrey said.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with two counts of burglary, resisting police, male assaults female, assaults child, indecent assault and wilful damage.

He will appear in Manukau District Court today.
