A woman has been charged after a puppy was stolen from her foster home on Auckland’s North Shore.

Pebbles, a three-month-old Shar Pei mix, was taken from a property in Birkdale on Friday, Matariki Day, South Auckland Animal Rescue said.

In a post to social media, Acting Detective Sergeant Beth Bates said the pup was found by tactical crime unit staff "safe and sound".

"It’s a happy ending, but Pebbles is still searching for her forever home," Bates said.

South Auckland Animal Rescue said they were "absolutely overjoyed to share that Pebbles is now safely back in our care and will be receiving a full health check with our veterinary team".

"We simply cannot thank NZ Police enough for their unwavering support, professionalism, and reassurance throughout this ordeal. From the very beginning, they promised they would do everything they could to bring Pebbles home – and, today, they kept that promise," the rescue said today on social media.

"A special thank you to these two incredible officers, who were part of an outstanding team. It truly took a village, and we are so incredibly grateful to every person involved in helping bring our precious girl home.
