Police are appealing for witnesses to an assault in Auckland's Onehunga this morning that left a victim with critical injuries.

The assault occurred at a car park on Beachcroft Avenue at around 7.50am.

St John said it responded with an ambulance, a rapid response unit and a manager.

"One patient was assessed, treated, and transported to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition," a St John spokesperson said.

Detective Senior Sergeant Bolton said police would like to speak with a number of people they believe can help with the investigation.

“Specifically, we would like to hear from a woman wearing a yellow/mustard coloured top who was walking her dog. We would also like to speak with a woman who has a red vehicle and may have assisted the victim prior to the arrival of emergency services."

Police also ask anyone who may have seen a dark coloured station wagon with black roof racks in the area between 5.45am and 8.20am to contact them.

Cordons remained in place around the area as police investigate.

Anyone with information can contact Police by calling 105, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 0800 555 111.

St John has been contacted for comment.
