Jimmy Barnes and other Cold Chisel members are mourning the loss of Kiwi-born saxophonist Andy Bickers, who has died of cancer.

The band announced Bickers' passing to social media on Friday, remembering him as their "much-loved sax-player of more than 30 years".

"Andy was our brother: an incredible musician and a great person to be out on the road or out on the town with," the band wrote.

"His valuable contribution onstage to songs like Rising Sun, Saturday Night and My Baby will be sorely missed. Our hearts break for his wife Lisa and his son Rudy."

Born in New Zealand, Bickers played in rock bands throughout the 80s before moving to Australia. He was later called to join Barnes' touring band, eventually becoming a member of Cold Chisel.

Barnes paid tribute to Bickers in a social media post of his own, saying: "We were friends not only because he was a great player but he was funny, intelligent, and most importantly he was a good man.

"You will be sadly missed, Andy."

Bickers also toured with other big name artists including Midnight Oil, Silverchair, the Eagles and Don Henley.

Midnight Oil paid tribute to Bickers, praising the "signature power and passion" behind his saxophone playing.

"Vale much loved sax player for the Oils and so many other artists — Andy Bickers — who left us today after a long illness. Our thoughts are with his wife Lisa and son Rudy," the band said.
