Three people have been injured — one critically — after a two-vehicle crash in Northland's Ahipara this morning.

Police said Kaitaia-Awaroa Rd was closed at the intersection with Tangonge Rd — approximately 30km southwest of Kaitāia — following the two-vehicle crash just before 10am.

"Initial indications are that there are serious injuries," a police spokesperson said.

St John said it sent one manager, two ambulances, and one helicopter.

"Our crews assessed and treated three patients; one in a critical condition and one in a moderate condition were transported to Northland Base hospital, one patient in a minor condition was treated at the scene."

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and expect delays.

"We are on scene extricating one patient and assisting police," a FENZ spokesperson said.
