A person is believed to be seriously injured after a vehicle and horse collided north of Christchurch yesterday.

Emergency services were called to Tram Road near the intersection with Whites Road in Swannanoa, 35 kilometres northwest of Christchurch, at 6.55pm.

Police said the crash involved a vehicle and a horse.

"Initial indications are that one person is seriously injured," a police spokesperson said.

The road was closed, and motorists were told to avoid the area if possible.
