Five injured after three-vehicle crash on bridge near Queenstown

Five people have been injured, including one who was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital, after a three-vehicle crash on the Kawarau Bridge near Queenstown this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Gibbston Highway, State Highway 6 at around 11.45am Saturday.

Hato Hone St John said three ambulances, one operations manager and one helicopter responded to the scene.

One person in a serious condition was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital.

Another person in a serious condition and a person in a moderate condition were transported to Lakes District Hospital.

Two people in a minor condition were treated at the scene.

The road was briefly closed after the crash but had since reopened with a 50km/h temporary speed restriction in place, according to NZTA Waka Kotahi.

"People are asked to travel with care through this area," it said.

The Serious Crash Unit had been notified.

The Kawarau Bridge is located near the popular Kawarau River Bungy Jump, which overlooks the Kawarau River.
