A man has died after a crash involving an e-scooter in Christchurch in the early hours on Sunday morning.

It is at least the fourth serious e-scooter incident in the past year.

The incident occurred at around 12.10am on Sunday on Antigua St near the Burke St intersection, according to police.

The rider of the e-scooter received serious injuries and was taken to hospital. "Sadly, despite best efforts from medical professionals, the man died in hospital," police said.

At this stage, police did not believe another vehicle was involved. However, inquiries into the circumstances of the crash were ongoing.

Police would like to speak with anyone who was in the Antigua St and Burke St areas at the time of the crash, or who may have CCTV footage in the area.

"The man was wearing a light-coloured jacket over a New Zealand Warriors top, blue jeans, and sneakers."

Police asked those with CCTV or dashcam footage in the area to review it.

"If you see anything that may assist our inquiries, please contact us."

Information could be provided via 105 either by phone or online, or provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers.

In March, a rider was critically injured in a collision with a vehicle on the corner or Mayoral Drive and Cook St in Auckland.

In January, a 30-year-old French national living in Christchurch was killed while riding an e-scooter after being struck by a freight train in Addington.

In October last year, an e-scooter rider had been critically injured after a collision with a car in the Auckland suburb of Epsom.
