Person dies after grievous assault in central Auckland

Emergency services were called to Wellesley Street East about 6.45pm after a report of a grievous assault involving people known to each other.

A person has died after what police described as a grievous assault involving people known to each other in central Auckland early yesterday evening.

In an updated statement this morning, Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Wilson said officers were called to Wellesley Street East about 6.45pm.

"A man was located with critical injuries and was transported to hospital but had passed away upon arrival."

Emergency services were called to Wellesley Street East about 6.45pm after a report of a grievous assault involving people known to each other.

A 23-year-old man was taken into custody and would appear in Auckland District Court today charged with murder.

"Police are not looking for anyone else in relation," Wilson said.

"A scene guard is in place while our inquiries into the incident are ongoing."
