Vehicle camping warrants are changing – what you need to know

Blue camping warrant sticker for vehicles

From Sunday, June 7, blue warrants will no longer be recognised for freedom camping purposes.

Campers have until June 6 to switch to a new green warrant system.

Freedom campers could face a $400 infringement notice if their vehicle is on public land without a green warrant.

The change marks the end of a transition period when New Zealand's new self-contained vehicle certification system was introduced in December 2023.

New green self-contained vehicle certification system.

The transition period was to give vehicle owners time to get certification under the new system.

More than 68,000 vehicles have now been certified and issued with green self-containment warrants.

The new freedom camping system was aimed at reducing the environmental and social impacts of freedom camping.

Vehicles must meet requirements to qualify for certification.

This included having fixed toilets, water supply, wastewater, ventilation and rubbish storage to manage waste while travelling.

On most public land, freedom camping was restricted to self-contained vehicles unless a local bylaw provided otherwise.

Councils, the Department of Conservation, and Land Information New Zealand were responsible for managing and enforcing freedom camping rules on the land.

The Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board regulated the self-contained vehicle certification system and appointed certification authorities, who were responsible for inspecting and certifying vehicles.
