Skeleton found in Otago matched to man missing for a year

Wakefield was reported missing from the Deborah Bay area May 13, 2025.

Human skeletal remains found on an Otago Peninsula coastline in March have been identified as belonging to a man who had been missing for more than a year.

A member of the public had found the remains on the Portobello coastline at low tide on March 23, police said.

"Police conducted a scene examination and made a number of inquiries on behalf of the coroner to identify the remains."

"They have since been formally identified as the remains of Murray Allen Wakefield."

Wakefield was reported missing from the Deborah Bay area May 13, 2025. He was 55 at the time.

Police had notified the family and offering support.

The death had been referred to the coroner.
