Man dies in police custody after being tasered in Tauranga

A man has died after becoming unconscious while in police custody in Tauranga overnight, following his earlier arrest in Mount Maunganui.

Superintendent Will Loughrin, Bay of Plenty District Commander said police spotted a vehicle linked to a man they were seeking at around 12.32am.

"This vehicle was monitored as it travelled through Mount Maunganui before the driver came to a stop on Kaniere St," Loughrin said.

The driver allegedly attempted to flee on foot before returning to the vehicle and ramming into a police vehicle while attempting to leave the scene.

Loughrin said a taser and OC spray were used while police arrested the man.

"The man was then transported to Tauranga Police station following his arrest and during that journey he became unresponsive," he said.

"Police requested medical assistance for the man immediately, with an ambulance being dispatched a minute later at about 12.42."

Police staff commenced CPR and paramedics took over the man's care on arrival.

He was pronounced dead shortly before 1.45am.

Police had informed the man’s family and were providing support, Loughrin said.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to them following this tragic incident and will continue to offer them all the necessary support at this difficult time."

A critical incident investigation has been launched, and the Independent Police Conduct Authority had been notified, which was standard procedure in such cases.

Loughrin said a number of inquiries and scene examinations were underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the man's death. Police staff involved in the incident were also being provided support.

WorkSafe had been notified.
